She's sad because she wants to raid a tomb but she can't because she's in a field and not near any tombs

WITCH and MUMMY

Two images taken from my contribution to Munchscronch, weekly illustration thing website. The theme was Halloween. Hence the Halloween-themed drawings. Because Halloween is soon. And we're all very excited about that.

comic - tree

Coloured version of this comic right HERE. I liked it better all not coloured and stuff. Maybe it's because I have no soul

sad john rambo in a field

Full disclosure: The only Rambo film I've actually seen is the 2008 one. You know, the one where the leathery corpse of John Rambo comes back from the dead to gun down the Burmese military. Or something. Anyway I'll watch the others some day.

Comic- The Man Who Smiled Too Much

This comic was initially drawn for Moonbeard, but I didn't quite like it enough. I think this version had essentially the same thing to say without being quite as unnecessarily long or as morbid. Or as gratuitous. I'll happily embrace any of those things if they're sufficiently justified, and they weren't in this case. Though I suppose "gratuitous" is, by definition, unjustified? I don't know. Also, pretty annoying Blogger won't let me post this full-size without breaking it up. Anyway, uh, cool.

sad scribe in a field

I don't know why I drew this. Not that I'm saying NZ rapper Scribe doesn't belong in a picture series of fictional characters that has included such Mario, Indiana Jones, and Batman. He quite obviously does.

Maybe I'm just homesick. Down the road from my house in Chch there was a Subway restaurant. On the wall was a plaque, signed by Scribe, that read: "How many dudes you know make rolls like this. Not many. If any." Possibly the only thing I miss about Eastgate Subway.

BANNER ART

The post title was a fabrication. There's no banner art here, only shitty internet ads I made for Moonbeard to use through Project Wonderful and on Inkoutbreak. That way all of the internet will see these ads and check out my webcomic and then I will get millions of dollars through the advertising that I may or may not actually ever put on the website. IT'S FLAWLESS.

This sort of overt self-promotion doesn't count as me selling out as long as I'm sufficiently impoverished.

That last one is kinda obnoxious huh. You can also see a fourth shitty ad on the right or this blog. I think the theory was that if I made the ads kinda terrible it would lower peoples' expectations and my comics would appear comparatively better. They didn't give me a Psyc degree for nuthin'.

You too can advertise my comics by taking any of these images and linking to me. I know, exciting idea right?!

Comic- King of Nothing

A coloured/ revised version of the original comic, on moonbeard.com:

Didn't much care for this comic in its original state, so had a play around. Added colour, texture, some approximation of shading, some panel vignetting, and altered the redefinition of "nothing" in the final panel so the comic actually makes a sort of sense. I don't know if I improved it. Flat black and white images are so much simpler

Digital Illustration

Digital illustration for use on a website (in progress) for a photo-blog for Amy. Was rejected outright for being too much like what you'd see on a "chick blog". Jeez. Clients. I think she was just mad because I made her look fat. Also I guess it does kinda look like she's on a therapist's couch, rather than the intended "floating on a li-lo." Also what is up with that right leg.

Munchscronch- Illustration Fighting

We've revamped the Munchscronch website. It's slightly prettier now.

For those not familiar, an excerpt from the website's About page:

Munchscronch exists as a place for loosely organized weekly illustration challenges, intended as an outlet for unfocused, meandering creative impulses and because illustrating is fun etc. Each week on Thursday (GMT+13) there will be a new theme. You (the artist) will then have an entire week to submit to us a creation according to this theme, and then everybody will clap their hands and vote on submissions and give you high-fives and stuff.

In other words, the Munchscronch website was created, along with some other design graduates, as totally just another way to help legitimize spending my time drawing dumb stuff on a weekly basis. See also: Moonbeard. Wordpress knowledge pretty much exclusively thanks to Mulliss.

Pencilled, inked, coloured in photoshop.

LOST CAT

I've moved cities, from Chch to Welly- only semi quake-related. So that's why this blog and my website have been conspicuously lacking updates of late. Anyway, I went to all the effort of getting our cat up here and he takes off as soon as he gets access to the outside world. Just watched Memories of Murder, a superb Korean detective film set in 1986 from the director of the also-excellent The Host and Mother. I'm now pretty convinced my cat was the victim of some sort of serial cat-murderer, though I'm conveniently omitting the sexual aspects of the film's murders from my cat-murderer hypothesis. I think I just don't want to believe. The film is based on a true story, you know.

The thumbs in the picture are drawn pretty accurate. He's a polydactyl cat, so if you see a cat hitch-hiking then pick him up and bring him to me. Looking at the poster now, I think it's pretty odd that I used a red pen to highlight the thumbs and underline some details but neglected to draw on his red collar. Yeah, that's pretty odd.

Fishies

Here are some fish.

Drawn for this. Not that I need a reason to draw fish. Not that anyone does. Draw some fish already.

COMIC: This Comic Doesn't Actually Deserve A Title

COMIC: Carbon Footprint

This is such a non-comic. Any thoughts on what a reasonable price would be for a 150 page book filled with comics of questionable quality? I'm talking to you, People-Who-Don't-Comment-But-Google-Analytics-Says-Exist.

COMIC: This Town Aint

More digitizing of old comics. Trying very hard not to think about all the time I've dedicated to drawing very silly comics.

darn

So I dug into the archives to start the (very) early stages of assembling some sort of comic anthology only to discover that the folders labelled "2007" and "2008" are completely empty. This is unfortunate. These comics have somehow imploded when switching computers or something. Never mind. It only means that I simply have to dig through boxes for the originals and rescan two years worth of comics. Gah. On the plus side, it means there may be slightly more stylistic consistency within the book now? Also, it looks like the book's going to be upwards of 120 pages. Anyways, here's a couple of 'em.

THE END OF THE WORLD- alternate

An alternate version to the one on moonbeard.com at the moment. I sure do like to overuse background dot-patterns, but oddly only when they're eye-hurtingly executed. Confession: this is posted mostly so that creepy kid isn't at the top of this blog. Eurgh.
